About this Learning Circle

“The more that you read, the more that you’ll know.

The more that you know, the more places you’ll go.”

– Dr. Seuss

A warm welcome to all students and teachers!

You have probably read some novels or poems, or parts of it, during your English classes. Or you might have seen some movies that are based on English books.

This all helps to improve your vocabulary and general understanding of this language and culture.

In this Learning Circle of the Global Teenager Project, we are going to tackle your knowledge of English literature in a different way:
All participants will join this global classroom for 4 months. You' ll meet peers from other countries, students, and teachers alike.

You'll be working on the same assignments, but are challenged to wonder, question, choose and share in your own way:

In 4 phases you’ll find many ways to learn together about English literature and language, meanwhile meeting each other.

We will find out how different we experience the same novels, poems, and movies, coming from various cultural backgrounds and looking through different lenses.

How interesting that’ll be!

Each group or class in this Learning Circle will post their contributions on their own school page. By using this wiki, email and several social media, you'll get the opportunity to be globally connected and gain more insight into each others’ lives.

It will be exciting to see what kind of English novels and poems your peers from all over the world are reading! Sharing experiences makes it a lot more fun to learn English!

You can find all the information on the 4 different phases in the sidebar, along with some more background information. At the bottom of this home page, you can click on the name of your school to find your school page.

Let's start!

Timeline of the Learning Circle

The 4 phases of this Circle (see Timeline)

1. Introduction, 3 weeks in February:

Before we start to learn and work together, it's nice to get to know each other.

Present yourself and your class and meet your global classmates!

2. Challenges, 4 weeks in March:

This phase starts with a conversation in your class about your experiences with English literature.

We'll present some famous titles and suggestions, followed by assignments.  Students will share their answers and inspire others by giving their own tips and reviews of books, poems, and films, seen from their perspectives.

3. Short stories, 4 weeks in April:

Each class starts with designing a good prompt for a short story. Groups or classes can choose one of the prompts, write a short story and give and receive feedback. In addition, we ask all participants to organize meeting two other groups in Skype and social media. This leads to lively conversations, interesting feedback and fun in learning!

4. Completion, 3 weeks in May:

In the first week, each student writes an individual letter about a favorite book, poem or movie and share their eye openers and reflections.

In the final 2 weeks, the tool peerScholar connects 3 global classmates. It enables students to give and receive feedback and enjoy lively peer reflection.

Phase 4 -Completion

May 14 - June 3  2018

NEWSLETTER Monday June 4 (week 17):

Hi everyone,

After a learning adventure of almost 4 months, the Learning Circles English Literature have ended for this school year.

We want to thank you for your participation in this first English Literature Circle! We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

In the final phase, wonderful letters have been written about your favourites, some with very personal messages.

Some schools used the peer-learning tool peerScholar, others have added letters on their school page.

Please add your evaluations on your school page too, to finish the circles together.

This wiki stays open, so it’s possible to look closely at the contributions of other schools in the next weeks or months.

We will collect all your personal letters, and share the 3 winning letters with you in this wiki.

The next months: we are preparing the new Learning Circles that will start in February 2019.

We'll keep you posted!

Keep up the good spirit!

On behalf of the LC team,

Manon of Herwijnen and

Merel Meuwese (facilitator)

Learning & working in a global classroom

The main purpose of this Learning Circle is to enable a global connection

By sharing your ideas, thoughts, knowledge, and inspiration you will learn a lot and gain more insight into each others’ lives.

Feedback and comments: All groups are asked to closely cooperate, by looking at the pages of the other participants and give comments and feedback directly on these pages.

Students co-create new knowledge and future skills: To keep track of what skills are addressed and what it has brought to your class see the page 'Learning & practicing skills' in the sidebar.

To really get in touch and discuss your work, we have created a schedule for all schools to meet via Skype.

In April each group or class will organize a video conference with at least 2 other classes. Of course, you can also start in February or March if you want to.

Exciting and fun!
